Exhibition Info

Gallery Lumiere exhibits Jock Sturges¡¯ naturalist nude from Oct. 14th to Nov. 24th. It is our third exhibition right after we have had a great success in Henri Cartier-Bresson¡¯s exhibition.

Jock Sturges¡¯ nude exhibition consists of twenty three works that show naturalists taking a rest in beaches of California and France. It will be a good chance to be involved in the quiet and peaceful break of naturalist family who are yet unfamiliar to us. The models in the pictures look comfortable because they are appeared in a natural way that they wanted to be. Jock Sturges¡¯ nudes are taken in 8x10 view camera, and we feel a purely natural beauty of a human being rather than a sexual desire or salacity from his nudes.

We hope that the visitors would feel the same as the naturalists in a peaceful environment of the summer without having a stereotype of nude. Also, we are preparing for a seminar and a party, ¡®Jock Sturges¡¯ night¡¯ while we are organizing the Jock Sturges¡¯ exhibition.

Photographer Info
Jock Sturges was born in New York City in 1947. He received a B.A. in Perceptual Psychology and Photography from Marlboro College and went on to receive his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute.
Through photographic portraiture, Jock Sturges portrays the radiance of the children of close friends and family. Using an 8x10 camera, he reveals the relationship of the people in his life with their inner self, and he depicts the luminescence of the human form, unclothed and unashamed. The images are a collaboration of trust and admiration between artist and subject.

His work is in the collections of major institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work is published in numerous monographs. He has exhibited widely in the United States as well as in France and Japan
